Last October, we published a story on our blog about Nissan's big win at last year's CEATEC Innovation Awards for its development of an autonomously driven vehicle. Since then, research and progress has not slowed and today we thought we would update you with the latest on the Nissan Autonomous Drive program.

At the Detroit Auto Show, Nissan executives sat down with the media for a series of interviews. One of the big topics was self-driving cars. The Nissan big shots affirmed their commitment to bring a car with comprehensive autonomous driving technology into production by the year 2020. They admitted that the technology won't be ready for use on city streets but highway driving is well within the realm of possibility.

Currently, the company  is in talks with the state of California about approving the testing and development of self-driving technology on public roads. There are plenty of hurdles that both automakers and state regulators will have to jump in order to make this dream a reality. Concerns about liability, technology, regulation, and safety are all factors and will take time to work out. That being said, Nissan truly believes that the Autonomous Drive system could help eliminate a large amount of traffic accidents as studies show that 93 percent of crashes are directly due to human error.
